Vanadium (V)
- Description
Description
Vanadium is a hard, silvery-grey, malleable transition metal. It is an average-hard, ductile, steel-blue metal. It is electrically conductive and thermally insulating. Vanadium is usually described as “soft”, because it is ductile, malleable, and not brittle.
Vanadium is harder than most metals and steels. It has good resistance to corrosion and it is stable against alkalis and sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. It is oxidized in air at about 933 K (660 °C, 1220 °F), although an oxide Passivation layer forms even at room temperature.
Applications of Vanadium
Vanadium can be used to make steel alloys, for use in space vehicles, nuclear reactors and aircraft carriers, etc. Vanadium steel alloys’ strength means that they are perfectly suited to the creation of tools, axles, piston rods and as girders in construction.
