Description

Rhenium does not have a ductile to a brittle transition temperature and does not form carbides, yet it has the highest density and melting points. This metal is ideal for filament applications because of its high resistivity, combined with low vapor pressure. Excellent corrosion resistance resists acid attack and the mechanical effects of electrical erosion. Rhenium has a beneficial effect as an alloying addition with other refractory metals as it dramatically enhances the ductility and tensile strength of these alloys. Tungsten-Rhenium and Molybdenum-Rhenium alloys can be processed into plates, sheets, rods, wires, foils, and more.

Rhenium Applications
Rhenium is widely used as filaments for mass spectrographs, grid heaters, cathode cups, thermocouples, nuclear reactors, semiconductors.
Rhenium alloyed with tungsten and molybdenum is used for jet engines.
Rhenium is also used as an additive to Tungsten- and Molybdenum- based alloys to give useful properties. These alloys are used for oven filaments and x-ray machines. It is also used as an electrical contact material as it resists wear and withstands arc corrosion.
Rhenium catalysts are extremely resistant to poisoning (deactivation) and are used for the hydrogenation of fine chemicals. Some rhenium is used in nickel alloys to make single-crystal turbine blades.
